BEING A CAREGIVER
Manny Fonseca became a full time caregiver after his girlfriend suffered from a ruptured aneurysm followed by a severe stroke. She spent 167 days in 3 different facilities and Manny was there for every day of it, constantly advocating for her.
Once home, Cheryl spent the next 6 months in an intense in-home therapy program followed by another few months of outpatient therapy. She was practically a “zombie” that entire time. She lovingly refers to that period as her “coma dream.”
Advocacy doesn’t stop just because you’re out of the hospital. It’s been a long road to recovery for Cheryl and it’s not over yet. Manny continues to advocate for Cheryl and help her get some sort of normalcy back into her life.
ABOUT THE REAL MANNY
The idea is simple: A place to chat about the ups and downs of being a caregiver. Your story might be different, your struggle might be different, but as caregivers, everyone should be able to relate to what we deal with every day.
This is a place for caregivers to share the joy of the successes because those that we take care of deserve to be praised. At the same time, this is also a place for us to be a little selfish…because that’s what WE deserve! To take care of ourselves because, as we all know, if we don’t take care of ourselves…eh…you know the rest.
ABOUT MANNY FONSECA
Author and Screenwriter, Manny Fonseca, was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Media Studies from Wayne State University, he attended Ohio University where he got his Masters in Film Production with an emphasis in screenwriting.
After graduation, he left his midwest life and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in Hollywood. For years he worked in development as an executive, helping writers, speaking at events and script consulting.
Manny Fonseca, along with Cheryl Diffin, was co-host to a popular industry podcast Breakin’ In! aimed at helping writers avoid the mistakes he saw in his day job. Although currently on hiatus due to Cheryl’s condition, the podcast and website still receives a fair amount of traffic on a weekly basis.
When Cheryl suffered from a ruptured aneurysm in 2014, Manny left Hollywood to focus on her as well as dive into the world of writing full time, which was the reason he came out to Hollywood in the first place. Cheryl spent 167 days in 3 different facilities and Manny was there for every single one of those days. He kept a journal and took photos of her entire road to recovery.
He took all of that and compiled it into a book entitled Burst! What I learned When My Girlfriend’s Aneurysm Popped* which is currently in the process of finding a publisher.
Manny currently lives with Cheryl in Long Beach, CA.
